Zermatt and the Matterhorn

Zermatt is first recorded as German: Zermatte in 1228. From 1495 to 1526 it was unified with Valtournenche under the name of Villars before becoming Zermatt again in 1558.
The name comes from zer (alpine meadow) and matta (stony ground).
The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetrical pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summits lie partly in Italy and partly in Switzerland. St. Moritz

The town is first mentioned in 1137 as monasterium de Sancto Mauricio. In 1156 it was mentioned as Maurice. The name derives from Saint Maurice, the leader of the legendary Theban Legion who were massacred near Agaunum (Saint-Maurice-de-Valais) in present-day Switzerland.
The village's coat of arms shows two lions rampant supporting a crossed heraldic staff and is therefore derived from the town's patron saint, Saint Maurice.
The village was originally settled by the Romans who built a fort at nearby Pontresina to help protect their trade route through the Alps to Italy. A number of Roman coins have been found in St. Moritz and there are ruins of a Roman bath building near Lej da Stazzona on the Lake's south shore.
